What Do Paddle Shifters Do?

Generally speaking, a manual transmission requires manual shifting while an automatic transmission shifts automatically. However, a paddle shifter is a component on an automatic transmission that allows you to shift to a new gear in mere seconds. Usually found on sportier models, paddle shifters allow you gain greater control over your vehicle for a more versatile driving experience. Not only does this component help you manage your RPM more effectively, but proper usage can even prolong the life of your brake pads.

Paddle Shifter 101

Before you can use paddle shifters around Broomfield, you’ll need to get into S mode with your clutch stick. This switches you out of automatic (D mode) to gain full control. Keep in mind that your right paddle will upshift and your left paddle will downshift – but don’t get too worried. The shifters will not cause a gear shift if you:

• Downshift before reaching the upper limit of the lower gear.
• Upshift before the engine reach the lower limit of the higher gear.
• Press both paddles at the same time.
• Shift to third or higher while stationary.
• Press one paddle while the other is held down.

And just remember, if you want to hop out of paddle shifter mode, just flip back into D mode to trigger the automatic shifting system again.
