When To Use Low Gear

Gear Shifter

If you’ve ever struggled down a steep hill in Denver or an angled road in Aurora, then you might already know how important low gear can be. Just what is low gear in a car and when should you use it? Let’s find out!

What is Low Gear in a Car?

“Low gear” refers to a ratio of vehicle speed to engine speed. When the engine is moving hard and the wheels are moving slower, you’re in low gear. You can activate low gear in a number of ways, depending on your car’s make and model:

  • Manual Transmission: Downshift into a lower gear before you encounter an obstacle.
  • Automatic Transmission: To create the conditions for low gear, you’ll need to do the following:
    • Ease off the gas before you notice the obstacle.
    • Make sure your speed is low enough to trigger low gear.
    • Leave plenty of time to slow before you get to the obstacle.
    • Once your speed is reduced sufficiently, stay in low gear by braking.

Why is Low Gear Helpful?

Low gear is very useful when you encounter a steep hill or extended downgrade. That’s because your brakes work hard when descending, maintaining your speed and fighting gravity as you drive. In regular conditions, this prolonged stress can cause your brakes to overheat – which can even lead to failure! But when you hop into low gear, your engine braking system will aid your brakes to create a more efficient driving experience. In addition to hills, you might find low gear useful for:

  • Steep Ascents: Low gear provides less rollbacks and a smoother experience when driving up a steep hill.
  • Slippery Roads: Low gear offers extra control when ice and mud cover the Broomfield roads, creating better traction and handling in tough conditions.
