Steps for Changing a Tire Properly

Before you learn how to change a tire, you’ll need to gather the proper equipment. This includes a jack, lug wrench, spare tire or new tire, and your owner’s manual. Whether you have an SUV or a sedan, the process of changing tires is similar – and your owner’s manual will have all the details about your particular make and model.

  1. Pull off the road to a safe place and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Apply the parking brake and place wheel wedges or rocks under the tires for safety.
  3. Take the wheel cover or hubcap off of the tire and loosen the lug nuts.
  4. Raise your vehicle with the jack and take off the lug nuts.
  5. Pull off the old tire and mount the new tire.
  6. Tighten the lug nuts again, and then lower the vehicle to the ground completely.

How Often Should You Change Car Tires?

Knowing how often to change car tires is another important skill for a Thornton driver. Tire tread wears down over time, which can hinder your performance and safety on the roads. The best way to keep you set in great shape is to follow the recommended maintenance schedule. This includes tire rotations and alignment, which help to even out the wear and tear over time. If you have other questions about how often to change your car tires, don’t hesitate to ask our service center.

Other Tire Care Tips and Tricks

What else should you know about tire care? Here are a few extra pieces of advice for drivers:

  • Tire Pressure: Maintaining the proper tire pressure can boost your handling and even fuel economy. If your tire pressure is low, find an air dispenser at a local gas station. Remove the tire valve cap from your tire, check the pressure with a gauge, use the air hose to add air, and check the pressure until it falls within the guidelines.
  • Spare Tires: A spare tire is valuable in a pinch, but spare tires are not as durable as a regular tire. Most spares can’t go over 50 mph or longer than 50 miles total, so be sure to get a replacement as soon as possible.
